Looks like a Highlander got it on with an Avalon in West Virginia

The amount of effort that went into making those rear fender flares must have been intense. This is a van for the aggressively dynamic family, I guess.

Yuck.

Looks like a C-HR (HRV? I can never remember which one is a Toyota and which is a Honda) that got stung by a bee.

LOL for local commercials touting the prior (pre-puffy) Highlander, they called it “aggressively sophisticated”.

I love it. I was thumbing through the photos on Autoblog and got to the profile view of the red one and muttered to myself, “Damn. That’s dope.”
10/10 would haul my kids around in that Sienna.

Hybrid all the things!
Good decision on their part - should be just the standard for many cars out there.
The rear looks quite odd from the side profile, but other than that don’t think it’s too bad for what it is. The interior also looks significantly de-cluttered and spaceship like, looks like a pretty nice place to be stuck with a family if you need a minivan.

I guess the latest Toyota design language is “angry pufferfish”. Can’t wait to see how it is mated to Predator-faced Nike-swooshed Lexus models.

I saw an ad for a Porsche Cayman a while back that touted it as “an uncompromising declaration of individuality.”
Like, yeah, be individualistic and buy a greyscale Porsche, don’t go near a Lotus Evora because that’s too mainstream

Hey, at least it wasn’t a Macan or Cayenne, and can be spec’d in wacky colors. But yeah, Porsche isn’t for the truly daring unless it’s a highly modified 924 or maybe a 928.

Man, that’s fugly. When we got my wife’s then- new ‘18 Sienna back in October of that year , I thought those had an ugly mug with the 2018's facelift, but this new ‘21 makes the ‘18-’20 models look pretty inoffensive.
A van is supposed to be just a van: Comfortable, spacious, and floaty over shitty roads. I dunno why manufacturers are trying to “sport” them up with rougher suspension and aggressive styling.
This ‘21 makes me feel a lot better that we didn’t hold out for the all-new model.

Because of fleet emission standards more hybrids means Toyota can get looser with the emissions on the 86 and Supra!

That grill is 3x too big.
Also, adding hybrid but no plug? Just trying to bump the Maroney rating rather than really trying to decrease consumption. It’s a minivan. Owners are going to have a place to plug in, and a whole lot of shorter trips that could be all electric. But not in this.

No way will there be a Lexus version of the Sienna. We're not Japan after all.

its about time the hybrid people got around to doing a hybrid van. The eAWD sounds interesting. They claim 80% of drive force can go to the rear axle. That means the MGR (motor/generator Rear) must be pretty beefy. It’s also cool that they are keeping the tow rating what it is; 3500 lbs aint a lot but it should be enough do small popups. My popup is right at 3500 loaded, though it’ s a pretty massive hector.
All in all it’ s a pretty impressive come back to the pacifica hybrid which had the benefit of being pretty and hybrid but the disadvantage of...everything else a pacifica is .
I want to know more details though since they don’t give separate power ratings for the AWD and standard forms. You would think adding a second motor that can be 80% as powerful as the FWD system would add total system power. Unless the AWD version drops a larger MG up front in favor of the big one out back.

Its g ot t hat weird rear wheel /fender treatment. I ts even more wonky than the one on the Mirai. not a fan.

They need to offer a TRD supercharger for the V6, and I’d like to see a base non-hybrid 4-cylinder again.

RX is as close as we get, it’s effectively a Lexus minivan for sheltered suburbanites who won’t be caught dead in a minivan.

Most of these will be showing up at the airport taxi queue.

I don’t think many cars are dynamically daring anymore, not with nannies.

Reminds me of an old Motorcycle magazine cover stating that a full dress Goldwing was "flickable". Uh, I don't think those words mean what you think they mean.

It is not good looking at all. That being said I won’t have to look at it if I’m napping in that second row while someone drives me around.

I too think that XSE in that particular shade of red looks pretty awesome for a minivan. Folks need to live a little. Wonder what the venn diagram between people who think JDM vans are cool but also think that this thing is too offensive would look like.
![]() 05/18/2020 at 13:45 |

No (because nobody will buy a TRD supercharged V6 Sienna), and why on the non-hybrid 4 pot?
![]() 05/18/2020 at 13:46 |
|
But new things scary!
![]() 05/18/2020 at 13:47 |
|
Well, the non-hybrid 4 will cost less, get better gas mileage than the V6 , and it will be much easier to work on :o)
The hybrid will be much m
ore expensive than the V6

Interior doesn’t seem much different than than 2014 Sienna I was shuttled in last year. That faux textured woodgrain stuff is truly unpleasant to the touch.
Side profile is like a new Odyssey and a NX smashed pelvic regions.

Yeah but this was actually grooved/textured. Had about the intimacy of a sexual experience where the further you went, the worse it got.

Definitely curious to see where pricing comes out. Guess we’ll never have an apples to apples comparison given that this is a whole new vehicle - but if within a reasonable amount from the V6, probably a pretty decent compromise of power for MPGs.
Agreed with your points about a 4 pot, but that could’ve been true for the V6 as well - having a N/A 4 pot option. As for working on it, sadly you’re probably in the minority - again don’t know how many actual Sienna buyers are also working on them in their driveways. Toyota has been doing the hybrid game for a long time now and there don’t seem to be any massive reliability concerns there.
In other words - the reasons you’re listing out are exactly the reasons they don’t want to do it. More money for them (while also being a reasonable choice for the average buyer)!

I dunno that the 4-banger would get better mileage than the 6, as that’s a lot of vehicle to move around for an N/A 4 and it’d be working harder to do the same task as a 6. Weigh it down with cargo and people and it’d be even worse.
My wife’s ‘18 has gotten 30+ mpg on multiple occasions over a whole tank , and the highest we’ve seen so far is 34.6 over half a tank. Not too shabby for a barge with almost 300 hp, but that 8-speed really keeps the revs down when they aren’t needed.

It’s not awful. Better looking than the odyssey. My wife and I would have cross shopped this with our 2017 Pacifica had it been around. But now the Pacifica is restyling as well, so not sure, but it looks loads better than the previous gen. At least they got the wheel and tire fitment right on this one. The last gen was way under tired and made it look even more bloated. But I’d drive one.

I beg to differ ... I will buy a V6 supercharged TRD version it’s the only way to justify that overstyled bodywork. Did I get that right - no V6 at all? Sucks, I thoroughly enjoy blowing the doors off little hot hatches and bro trucks with our current Sienna at the stoplight.
